In the heart of the city, Museum Reinhard Ernst is emerging as a new public museum for abstract art. It is named after entrepreneur and collector Reinhard Ernst, whose collection comprises around 900 works, some of them monumental.

The design of the white cube comes from Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki. Across 9,000 square meters, the building combines high architectural standards with functional spaces for exhibitions, gastronomy, a museum shop, and a children’s area.

The collection ranges from German and European post-war art to abstract Japanese art and American abstract expressionism. It forms the basis of the future presentation, even though many works, as is customary in museums, will remain in storage and be available for temporary exhibitions or loans.

We spoke with Lea Schaefer, curator at Museum Reinhard Ernst, about the digital planning of the exhibition spaces.
